[Column] The Mechanism and Operating Principles of Light Sensors: Introduction to Types and Examples of Use.

What are the mechanisms and operating principles of light sensors? Introducing various types and usage examples! Numerous achievements in multiple fields! Leave the development of circuit boards and sensors to Nippo!

A light sensor is a device that detects light and converts it into an electrical signal. The basic mechanism involves detecting incoming light and converting it into an electrical signal through various responses at a part called the "light-receiving element," depending on the intensity and wavelength of the light. The operating principle of a light sensor is to detect various information based on the magnitude of the current generated when light hits the light-receiving element. In the case of a photodiode being used as the light-receiving element, when light is incident, photons generate and separate electrons and holes within the semiconductor, producing a current in the external circuit. Since the current changes in proportion to the intensity of the light, it is possible to measure the strength of the light electrically. Light sensors are widely applied in various fields. Here are some specific examples: ● Industrial field: Quality control of products and position detection on automated lines ● Medical field: Pulse oximeters that measure oxygen concentration in the blood, imaging diagnostic devices that utilize light ● Daily life: Automatic doors, brightness adjustment of smartphone screens, automatic lighting of car headlights, etc. At Nippo, we also have a track record of developing light sensors for agricultural use that utilize photodiodes. You can leave the circuit board development to Nippo. Case design is also possible.
